A Study on Depression of Hemodialysis Patients


Abstract
This study was designed to investigate the level of depression and depressive coping behavior of Hemodialysis patients.
Forty hemodialysis patients with chronic renal failure from 2 university hospitals, 2 medical clinics in Seoul, were accidental sampled.
Data was collected from the 10th of Feb. to 24th of Feb. 1992, by means of questionaire.
The instruments for this study were Beck¢¥s Depression Inventory (BDI) which consists of 21 items, and the depressive coping behavior scale was developed by Lee (1981). The Data were analyzed by use of descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA. The results of this study were as follows;
1. Level of Depression on Hemodialysis patients revealed to be moderate. (BDI mean scores= 20.8).
The Level of depression according to age revealed significant difference (p < .05).
2. Hemodialysis patients used the fifty-two depressive coping behaviors. In low-level depression, hemodialysis patients used interpersonal oriented behavior and cognitive activity oriented behavior. In moderate depression, cognitive activity oriented behavior were used by patients. In severe depression, hemodialysis patients used solitary behavior.
